once in hong kong, we hopped on a double decker bus from the airport and made our way to tsim sha tsui and nathan road…an area of kowloon known for its dozens of budget hotels. as in korea, the hundreds of tall apartment buildings against the backdrop of the mountains along the way are so dramatic! we found the 1st hostel on our list, usa hotel, in a bizarre building that’s a maze of shops and guest houses w/ solicitors jockeying to get you the best room, the cheapest price, etc…we took a look at the rooms (very tiny, but renovated and clean) and booked a couple nights…we should’ve negotiated on price (apparently everything’s negotiable here) but we were a bit road weary and not thinking on our feet…but for $350hkd/ night it isn’t bad. we dropped our bags and headed out through the throngs of shoppers to see our new neighborhood…man, i thought americans were into shopping! block after block of high end designer stores…and salesmen on the street corners all the while hawking custom tailored suits for $100hkd and women offering foot massages.
after a beautiful sunset over the water, we relaxed outside the hong kong cultural center and listened to the vienna symphony orchestra. score for us - free entertainment and a beautiful way to end the day!
