literally, i mean…it rained for our first three days solid
in japan! no worries, though…we didn’t
let it stop us from hitting the streets of the big city. we started out our
first day with an adventurous Japanese style breakfast…mental note…save
“adventurous” eating for later in the day!
although i knew what to expect from
my bowl of rice, miso soup and piece of salty fish, i was unprepared for the
cold raw tofu slab sprinkled with seaweed…and neither was daryll prepared for his
fermented soybeans with some sort of sticky mustard-like sauce…it looked a bit
like alien vs. predator eggs ready to hatch. lol! at least we got some good
protein to carry us thru the morning! we spent the morning walking around shinjuku,
which was much less lively by day than it was the night before…mostly a
business district. we walked for a few hours through central park and the
imperial gardens before we stopped for a much tastier lunch of chinese noodles.
after lunch it was back to the room for what was supposed to be a short nap
& to find ourselves accommodations for our next few days (since all we
booked before we came was our first couple nights in the hotel!) a short nap
turned into 4 hours for me and 3 for daryll—jet lag’s a bear--while we took
turns surfing the web in search of hostels with available rooms…hmm… trickier
than we thought it would be! we’re slowly getting the hang of this improvisational
travel & learning it will probably be good to stay 4 days to a week ahead
of ourselves when booking rooms to avoid being forced to pay high rates. it’ll
get easier once we get ourselves oriented a bit.
our next couple days were much more action packed. we moved
ourselves to our new digs in asakusa…a brand new hostel called k’s house tokyo…which
was sparkling clan & full of very friendly folks from all over. very cool!
we had a deluxe double to ourselves (with a deluxe price tag) since we had
booked so late & that was all they had left. But it was worth it to meet
some folks and feel a bit more connected. we did some sightseeing in asakusa
& had some very yummy treats before we headed out shibuya to check out the
night life.
day 2 was a much better eating day! delicious katsu-don for lunch,
fried bean paste (?) treats that come in flavors like pumpkin, green tea,
sesame & sweet potato…and the most delicious chocolate/banana croissant for
dessert!
what shall we say about shibuya at night? about
in
Ah! This armchair tourist is quite overwhelmed! You intrepid sojourners have a wonderful talent for telling stories and taking pictures. Thank you for taking the time to keep us abreast.
Debbi says please be sure to eat (she had not read your missive!), and implores you not to get married in Tokyo. I have no idea from whence that worry comes but I promised I would convey her concerns. Oh! She says Kokie loves you.
Love you bunches! Dad

Dee, I sweat you so hard! You know that blk/wht photo of dad snuck in between Malcolm, MLK jr., n company?... I have to find a similar one of black women to slip your photo between cause you’re on that level. I look up to you so much dee! And love you more than words can describe. I tell random people “my sisters going around the world” & keep walking. Not really looking for a response, just wanna let everyone know my sister is cool as a cucumber in a bowl of hot sauce. I asked my pedicurist, “did I tell you my sister is going around the world!?” she replies, “yes, you say that last time Bryan”. (slight language barrier so that’s my name to her). In short… love ya, miss ya, sweat ya.

Konichiwa ogeki deska, Wow...Can't believe the day has come and y'all have started this amazing trip. Kevin and I were so happy to chat with you before you boarded on your plane. Dawne: what your dad wrote (about how the world is your home now) is so true. I am sure you guys will cherish every moment of discovering this new home. At least I know you both have the patience and great sense of humor to deal with "surprises" such as fermented soybeans....whew!
I think the sensory overload thing was at a more palatable level when I lived in Tokyo in 1985-86. I wish I was there now to see what else has changed...if you walk by Seisen International School (12-15, Yoga 1-chome, Setagaya-ku), send a wave for me...that's where I went to school back then.

But I've been on your site all day and Its like I'm on freakin vacation too. The way you write I can actually smell see and taste the things you've done. Yall need to be on Essence. Now if you run out of theirs no hitch hiking I know that was a bad joke. But What I want to say I wish I was there too but I have very little balls I can not be away that long well maybe 6 months. Yeah I have midsize balls lol. Daryl and Dawne you get to snaps and a circle old skool proud. Please be careful in europe theirs alot of %^**( out there. LOVE Bernie
